Caring is all about doing “what is best for the animal”. This needs to be the deciding factor in every discission you make regarding care of wildlife. So here are a few things to consider before becoming a carer.
TIME
The time required to raise or care for a bird or animal. For example joeys require 4-5 hourly feeds. Baby birds require ½ to 2 hourly feeds.
FINANCES
Does your financial position support the care of wildlife? All carers pay for their own animal's food, shelter and other supplies.
CHILDREN
Very young and some older children don't understand the peace and quiet needed to raise wildlife. Continual noise, fussing and cuddling can result in extreme stress for the animal. These are native animals, not domestic pets. Stress alone can cause the death of an animal.
HOLIDAYS
Do you often go away? How would you cope with dependant wildlife? They cannot just be handed over to anyone to be cared for.
FAMILY COMMITMENTS
Does your family support your decision to care for wildlife?
DOMESTIC ANIMALS
Domestic animals can attack, injure and kill native animals and also pass on diseases they normally would not come in contact with.
SPACE AND EQUIPMENT
Yard space is a necessity for wildlife to be rehabilitated successfully.
VOLUNTEER CARER
All carers need to complete a CALM Volunteers Registration Form. This registers you with the Dept of CALM and identifies your area of interest as well as providing insurance. Volunteer Carers care for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in their own homes under the guidance of a Registered Carer or Wildlife Officer or rehabilitation centre. Working with your Registered Carer will assist you to become competent in animal care, hygiene, initial diagnosis, record keeping, when & how to release different species, zoonotic diseases and methods of euthanasia.
REGISTERED WILDLIFE CARER
Once you have completed the basic wildlife carers course and worked alongside a Registered Carer with over 5 years experience and shown yourself to be competent in all areas of animal rehabilitation, then you may apply to become a Registered Wildlife Carer. A Wildlife Officer from the department will make the final assessment of competency.
