Echidnas are monotremes whoses bodies are covered in prickly spines. They have tough spade like claws on their feet which they use for digging. Unfortunately echidnas are hit by cars when they try to cross roads. As they tend to move around more at night, they are often not seen until it is too late. Because they roll into a ball, they are quite often protected from serious injury, however a direct hit by a car can cause internal bleeding and death.
Echidnas are difficult to pick up and usually a good pair of gloves or a towel is required. Their excreetment is extremely offensive smelling so take care! They usually only require a couple of days in care before being released close to where they were picked up as they are territorial.
