Jim & Rachel look after reptiles. And Jim is a licensed snake catcher / taker through CALM.
They currently have 15 non venomous snakes at home being Stimsons Pythons and Black headed pythons. They also have a Blue Tongue lizard and a Northern Spiny tailed Gecko pictured below:
Just recently a local man brought in a sick Black Headed Python from the Burrup area. The snake is approximately 10 years old and weighs 1.8kilos.
Jim took the snake down to the local vets to see what they could do for the animal. It ended up having a bowel impaction and they had to operate to remove the blockage otherwise the snake would die.
It was a first for the local vets to operate on a snake and, the snake is recovering well so far.
Jim & Rachel have been looking after and selling snakes in Karratha for about a year now, and I asked them what is involved in looking after a snake or lizard?
“You have to have the correct enclosure, a terrarium or fish tank with correct lighting and something for the snake or lizard to hide inside, like a log or box. The perfect temperature of the

enclosure is about 28 to 34 degrees and the tank will need to be cleaned out once a week. They get fed about once a fortnight on thawed out mice or rats and it depends on the size of the snake as to the amount it is fed as it takes quiet some time for their food to digest.”
They also keep a written log of when the snakes are fed and when they shed their skin. A snake can shed its skin as often as every month or every 6 months, depending on the age of the snake and how quickly it is growing.
Snakes also get mites, ticks and internal parasites, so these need to be monitored on a regular basis and the animal treated accordingly.
And what do we do if we find a snake?
Leave it alone, keep an eye on it to see where it goes and call Jim and Rachael and they will come around and remove it for you. Never approach or tease a snake.
